Yehi’a and Teimania Habani

Yehi’a and Teimania immigrated to Israel from the city of Haban, Yemen, and in the Hashed camp in Yemen Teimania gave birth to her son, Zion. It was decided in the camp to separate the women from the men and the women and children were sent first to Israel, and housed in Atlit. The children in the camp were transferred to a nursery and the women were asked to come and nurse them three times a day.

Zion, the son of Yehi’a and Teimania God rest their souls, was taken from the Atlit camp in 1949 along with forty other children. The mothers were told that the children are being taken for vaccination in Jerusalem and will return the next morning, but none of them returned to his/her family. A week later, the families who were waiting for their children were sent from the camp and were dispersed throughout the country. After a month and half a letter arrived informing the family the child has died. The other mothers whose children were sent and were not returned also received letters informing them their children had died. Years later Yehi’a and Teimania received a draft notice for Zion. Today Keren Chopin, their granddaughter, with her family, still pray to locate him.
